With Your Legacy, Healing Begins
At Prevail, we believe no one deserves to experience violence — and everyone deserves the chance to heal. Since our founding in 1986, our community has stood together to address domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse. The 1986 Society honors that legacy — and builds the foundation for a safer, stronger future.
By including Prevail in your estate or long-term giving plans, you join a dedicated group of visionaries committed to ensuring that help, healing, and prevention efforts never stop.
Your planned gift will:
- Stand with survivors for generations to come
- Break cycles of violence in our community
- Offer hope and safety when it’s needed most
Why Planned Giving Matters
The need for Prevail’s services is urgent—and growing.
Indiana has the fifth-highest rate of domestic violence in the nation. Indiana youth experience physical dating violence at a rate 52.5% higher than the national average. One in five Hoosier women will experience sexual assault in her lifetime, and more than 14% of high school-aged girls and 5.2% of high school-aged boys in our state have reported being physically forced into unwanted sexual intercourse.
As Hamilton County continues to grow, so does the demand for crisis intervention, advocacy, prevention education, and long-term support for survivors. Planned giving allows you to make a lasting impact—ensuring that Prevail can continue providing lifesaving services, expanding prevention efforts, and building a safer, more connected community for generations to come. Through planned giving, you can ensure that no survivor walks alone.
Your legacy can provide:
- General operations support where it’s needed most
- Long-term stability through the Prevail Foundation or Donna Fund (endowment held at the Central Indiana Community Foundation)
- Sustainable funding for programs that save lives and foster healing
How to Become a Member of the 1986 Society
When you commit to a planned gift, you are welcomed into the 1986 Society. Members will receive recognition on the 1986 Society Wall at Prevail (unless you prefer anonymity) and invitations to special donor gatherings.
Becoming a member is simple:
- Include Prevail in your estate plans or make another planned gift.
- Meet with the Prevail Team to complete the Planned Giving Commitment Form to let us know about your gift.
This does not bind you or your estate – it simply helps us honor your wishes and welcome you into the 1986 Society.
Ways to Leave Your Legacy
You can tailor your gift to your personal goals and financial situation. Common giving options include:
One of the most popular and straightforward ways you can leave a legacy is through a bequest in your will or living trust. You can designate a percentage, a specific amount, or remainder after other obligations are met. If you already have a will, a simple amendment (codicil) can add Prevail as a beneficiary. Bequests of all sizes are appreciated. Living trusts work similarly and can be customized to your wishes with the help of an attorney.
Charitable gift annuities provide fixed income for life in exchange for irrevocable contribution, which may be in the form of case and/or appreciated securities. Benefits include guaranteed payments for you (and/or a lived one) for life, potential tax advantages, and the satisfaction of knowing that the remainder of funds will support Prevail’s mission. Rates are based on age.
With a charitable remainder trust, you transfer assets into an irrevocable trust that pays income to you or loved ones for life (or a set term), with the remainder going to Prevail. This option can provide consistent income, reduce capital gains and estate taxes, and allow you to make a significant future gift without giving up income during your lifetime.
You can make a powerful gift by naming Prevail as the beneficiary of a new or existing policy. You can also donate a policy you no longer need (with potential tax deductions for the policy’s value and any future premium payments you make). Another option is to simply purchase, and name Prevail as owner/beneficiary of a new insurance policy.
Naming Prevail as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or other retirement account is one of the most tax-efficient ways to give. Because retirement assets at final distribution may incur considerable taxation to your estate and heirs, a gift of these assets can be one of the lowest cost ways to provide critical support for Prevail’s work. Through your provider, you have the option of naming Prevail, Inc. as a primary or contingent beneficiary of your retirement plan and designating either a stated percentage or dollar amount.
If you are 70.5 or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution directly from your IRA to Prevail. This gift counts toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) and can reduce your taxable income.
You can recommend a grant to Prevail from your donor-advised fund now or name Prevail to receive the remaining balance after your lifetime.
Donating appreciated securities that you’ve held for more than one year can be a highly tax-efficient way to give. You can avoid paying capital gains taxes on appreciation, receive a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the gift, and make an immediate, significant impact without affecting your cash flow. Prevail can work directly with your broker to make the transfer simple.
In certain cases, you can donate residential or commercial property to Prevail, either outright or in a way that allows you to continue using it during your lifetime.
We are happy to work with you, your financial advisor, or other trusted professionals to ensure your gift reflects your wishes.
